Aindham Vedham Review:
Director Naga, who has a penchant for supernatural stories, is back with his
favourite genre. This time, he has chosen a complex plot in which fantasy and
spirituality meet artificial intelligence and planetary science. A host of characters
from different places in India and abroad are connected to a village named
Ayangarapuram in south Tamil Nadu. How an outlandish astronomical event is set
to alter their fate forms the crux of this web series.
It begins with a
free-spirited Anu (Sai Dhanshika) performing her mother's last rites in
Varanasi. She's excited about meeting a few people in Puducherry the next day,
but little does she know that fate has a spate of unforeseen plans for her.
Destiny takes her to a village where she occasionally bumps into mysterious
circumstances and people that deter her from leaving the mystic place. The plot
thickens when a priest, a filmmaker, a writer, a lawyer, a village head, a
sculptor and a tech geek become part of the scheme of things.
The central characters and their missions are slowly but steadily developed which helps the story achieve cohesiveness. The narration isn't rushed and this helps the viewers to invest in each character's motive and backstory. The ambiguity associated with scientific and spiritual terms does engage the viewers albeit the latter seems to dominate the former in a few sequences. Though there aren't many logical loopholes, the narration sporadically indulges in cinematic liberties.
The ambitious storyline
is complemented by convincing performances from its principal cast. Sai
Dhanshika and YG Mahendran stand out with their respective portrayals. Vivek
Rajagopal, too, registers his presence, thanks to some of the sequences
featuring him interacting with his AI girlfriend. Krisha Kurup and Devadarshini
fit into their roles well. Some smart ideas have been effectively conveyed on
screen while a few concepts that rely on religion deserve better explanation.
The compelling background
score is one of the highlights of the series; it elevates the detailing of
various plot points that culminate in the mysterious village. The tacky VFX,
however, is a letdown. Some of the sequences that do not reveal much in the
beginning make sense as the story progresses. The filmmaker has ensured not to
spoon-feed the viewers unnecessarily despite the intricacies of the story. This
helps in introducing new concepts and conflicts at regular intervals keeping
the audience glued to a large extent.
A slick making style and
fast-paced editing pattern would have worked wonders for Aindham Vedham which
succeeds only partly in making the viewers connect with its characters on an
emotional level. The intriguing cliffhanger teases with ample suspense to keep
us guessing till the second instalment, though.
